best virtual appliance. I would be surprised if an ASSP solution or two
wasn't submitted. I'm even considering doing it myself.

Leaf Firewall and ASSP were the first things that came to mind when I saw
that.  I heard this contest was open only to students however...

That is not correct. Anyone can attend, but only as individuals or teams
(no corporate entries).

However, there's also a $5k price for the best appliance built by a
student.
