What happens to emails when the destination MTA is offline

Rob Ellsworth

Hello everyone,

I'm looking to perform maintenance on our primary mail system, and the maintenance window is going to be a lengthy one.  What will ASSP do with the incoming emails?  Will it queue them to be sent once the MTA comes back online or will it bounce them?  Just wondering what I'm up against here.

Thank you for taking the time to read this,

- Rob

Before Thomas gets the chance to repeat it: "ASSP is not a mail server,
it is a proxy"

It can't queue messages. If there is no mail server at the other end,
then it won't complete the connection, and the client will not deliver
the mail. Whether or not the client tries to resend the mail is up to
the configuration of the client's output server. Most
correctly-configured servers will continue to try. Most spammers will not.

That is exactly what I was hoping for.  Resend (whether from ASSP or the Client) would be perfect!

Thank you for taking the time to respond,

- Rob

  What is "lengthy"?
As noted ASSP is a not mail server. If it cannot connect to its target
server, it drops the connection.
The sending MTA should queue and re-send the mail at regular
intervals, usually four hours, for up to 3 days (actual times depend on
server configuration), before giving up.

Lengthy in this case is only 18 hrs.  I won't be bumping into the limit
I believe.

True. There should be no lost mail.

If my MTA goes down, I have seen my ASSP terminates all workers and shut down.
In this situation, is it possible to leave ASSP running and waiting for MTA to restart ?
