access to 1.1.2 beta

Melvin Backus
Hello folks,

I've just started using ASSP and joined the list.  I keep seeing references
here and on the forums about the 1.1.2 beta, apparently something that
folks have been running for a few months.  I can't seem to find any
reference to where I might acquire it though.  Can anyone steer me in the
right direction.

TIA

Re: access to 1.1.2 beta

Melvin Backus
Is there any real reason not to put the packaged version up there?  Relying
on someone to get all the bits and pieces out of CVS would definitely seem
to move them to the "savvy" classification.  If this is as stable as it
seems and has been around for 6+ months, it doesn't seem like you should
expect to have to learn to deal with cvs in order to get it.  Sounds like
just asking for people to fail because of a missing file, etc.

RE: access to 1.1.2 beta

CVS on windows is no harder then FTP. Get a copy of Tortise CVS and use the sourceforge instructions to annoymously access CVS.

If your using a *nix, I would hope you know how to use CVS, it's like knowing how to SU root.

Packages are nice for Point-In-Time snaps of the files, but as I have learned over the years, if you want all the latest features of ASSP use CVS. I can't recall ever having a problem with files pulled from CVS.

RE: access to 1.1.2 beta

Ged West
In reply to this post by Melvin Backus
Would someone be willing to put a package together for 1.1.2 it would
just make it easier for those users that want the newer features but
just don't want to deal with installing a CVS client and trying to
figure out what they need to do to get the CVS.

I know I have enough to do with out trying to find a copy of Tortoise
CVS, install it, figure out how to use it etc.  It would probably be
easy but their site is down right now. And then when it is up there is
always... I am not sure which version I should be using? I have never
installed it before?  Where on sourceforge are the directions? How do I
use it once I get it installed? Which files should I grab? Some say
1.1.2 beta1 some say beta2? Etc..

If someone would post a fairly stable package even if it is a older beta
version it would make it easier for me, and I suspect, for some others
as well.

Thanks

Ged

I already gave the URL of the packages. It was at the start of this
thread.

1.1.2 b1 , b2,  b3 are all very stable. b2 and b3 have additional
features and bugfixes for a small group of users.

You have to start with b1, because there are additional files and
folders in the package. After that b2 and b3 are app replacement only.

Re: Project Status Was(RE: access to 1.1.2 beta)

Steve-40
Not at all, the father of assp John Hanna stepped back due to other
commitments and let other perl wizards add enhancements. Fritz seems to have
taken this lead at the moment. I am sure if he wished an email to John,
permission to access sourceforge would be given.

Again im sure if anyone wanted to update docs or fix the stats then John
would probably happy for that too.

But i do wonder why some seem to think assp needs fixing, it was even when
it was just the Bayesian filter very very effective spam solution. All
enhancements have just tuned it but in some ways made it much more complex
especially i would imagine for newbies. Some seem to want to tinker with the
spam but it is mainly a set and forget self tuning setup when numbers are
used for filenames. If the spammers were to breach assp in a major way then
it would soon get effort put in to fix it.

Steve.

It was and is a very effective spam solution. Everybody can choose to
stay with 1.09 - that is before RBL was implemented, more or less the
last Hanna-version.
But there are now a lot more and different (bigger) users and some
methods which were not known when Hanna started the project.
(graylisting=delaying).
ASSP worked for me from the beginning and it was close to perfect, but
it can be improved (and some bugs fixed).

I have not really taken the lead in the project, I just share some
information because there were vacuum in the project. And because
there were difficulties, to explain some changes I use now my
homepage, to show screenshots for explanations. I have send all my
changes to pzerkas, which is the author of the last offical beta 1.1.2
beta 1. He is working on a big new release.

I will stop to make hints on newer versions in this list.

Fritz

Re: Project Status Was(RE: access to 1.1.2 beta)

 Fritz,

I am sure everyone is very grateful of yours and others work. I only wish i
had the knowledge and time to but it way beyond me.

Yes the delaying is fanstatic i recently enabled this and over the last week
assp has been  100% effective even stoping spammers bouncing off list
control addresses. Not sure all these ideas are new i seem to recall many
being discussed with John.

If the newer releases or test betas are hosted elsewhere then the URL and
details posted here would be helpful to remind users where to look.

All i can do is test the betas and report the bugs.

Steve.
